The Bead Coalition and Save the Rhino International unite for rhinos

Today on Monday 22 September 2014, on World Rhino Day 2014, Save the Rhino International (SRI) is pleased to announce a new partnership with The Bead Coalition. On this day, people around the world celebrate all five rhino species and seek to raise funds and awareness to protect rhinos from the current poaching crisis. Poaching of rhinos for their horns is the biggest threat to the rhino’s survival, with the number of rhinos killed increasing by 7,600% since 2007 in South Africa alone. Wildlife trafficking (the third largest illegal trade after drugs and arms) destroys wildlife, threatens global security and affects employment of poorer local communities.
The Bead Coalition will help raise vital funds for rhino conservation through donating 20% of the recommended retail price to SRI for every Rhino Force bracelet sold in Europe. The Bead Coalition will also support SRI globally, by donating 20% of the recommended retail price of every Rhino Force bracelet purchased through the Bead Coalition’s website (www.beadcoalition.com). The support from The Bead Coalition and all those who purchase Rhino Force bracelets in Europe and online will help raise awareness of the rhino poaching crisis and help SRI deliver its support through conservation activities to protect all rhino species across 17 field programmes in Africa and Asia.
SRI is a vibrant UK based charity which works to protect all five rhino species in Africa and Asia and support the communities that share their habitat. By funding anti-poaching and monitoring patrols, environmental education, community conservation and demand reduction activities, SRI’s goal is to deliver long-lasting and widespread benefits to rhinos, ecosystems and local communities.
SRI’s Corporate Relations Manager, Josephine Gibson says “We are delighted to announce our partnership with the Bead Coalition on World Rhino Day 2014. Sadly, three rhinos are being been killed per day on average so far this year in South Africa alone (with 769 rhinos poached in the country by 10 September 2014). This year the number of rhino deaths (from poaching and natural mortalities) could overtake the number of rhino births, leading to overall rhino numbers going into decline. It’s a very important time for rhinos, and a partnership with The Bead Coalition will help support our field programmes to protect rhinos from ruthless criminal syndicates.”

RHINO FORCE SUPPORT BLACK RHINO TRANSLOCATION TO BOTSWANA

Logo[4] WS3Rhino Force Bracelet 01

18 June 2014

Wilderness Safaris is delighted to announce the successful capture of a small founder population of Critically Endangered black rhino in a joint collaboration with the Botswana and South African Governments. The rhino are destined for a safe haven in Botswana. This follows the successful capture and release of a group of black rhino last month and is part of an ongoing conservation project to establish a core population of this threatened species in Botswana.

“We are extremely proud of the success of this translocation project and the ongoing positive impact Wilderness has made to rhino conservation in Botswana and further afield over the past 20 years. We are very confident that these animals will settle well and breed, given that the habitats available have been assessed as being perfect for black rhino,” says Wilderness Safaris Group Conservation Manager, Kai Collins. He added that Botswana offers a safe refuge for Endangered species with full support and backing offered from the Government and Department of Wildlife and National Parks to secure their safety from potential poachers.

The Wilderness Botswana Rhino Project is an ongoing partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks. It was started in 2000 with the reintroduction of white rhino from southern Botswana into protected areas in the north of the country. Subsequent reintroductions of white rhino over the next five years increased the population substantially and the success of these rhino can be measured in the recruitment of calves born in the wild.

In 2003, a small group of south-central black rhino were introduced into the same area and a single calf was born in 2009. These highly threatened animals are known to have occurred in large numbers, possibly thousands in the mid-nineteenth century in the very area into which they have been introduced.

Thanks to extensive fundraising efforts in preparation for this translocation by the Wilderness Wildlife Trust and other important sponsors, including International Rhino Foundation, the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, Rhino Force and Empowers Africa, to name a few, the first part of the project has been a great success. “We look forward to completing the translocation process in the next few months and ensuring that these rhino are well looked after in their new home”, Collins added.

The Bead Coalition CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe says, “I believe private, commercial organisations urgently need to support direct conservation action to make a difference. We believe translocation protects and furthermore provides a safe haven for our endangered black rhino. Our tangible beaded bracelet helps raise funds for this vital project.”

The hand-made red, black and white bracelets, beaded in Africa, in previously disadvantaged rural communities, are sold globally, and delivered to the world. Support online at www.beadcoalition.com

RHINO FORCE WIN BCCSA – 50/50 REPRIMANDED

9 June 2014 – RHINO FORCE WIN BCCSA – 50/50 REPRIMANDED

50/50 REPRIMANDED – BCCSA VINDICATE

RHINO FORCE 100% BEHIND RHINO – NOT 50/50.

On 28 October 2013, 50/50 broadcast a feature on SABC 2 regarding Rhino Force, a commercial company that donates a percentage of profit from the sale of beaded bracelets to rhino conservation. Attorney Andrew Boerner of Jurgens Bekker Attorneys lodged a complaint against SABC 2 with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) on behalf of Rhino Force. The BCCSA ruled that SABC 2 was in contravention of Clause 12 and 13 of the BCCSA Free to Air Code stating in the judgment that:

  1. Whilst the original reason for the programme was reasonable and justified, and certainly dealt with a controversial issue of public importance, the programme itself was neither reasonable nor justified. The errors of fact, together with the omission of relevant material, eliminates any justification for such a programme within the ambit of the BCCSA Code.
  2. The programme included facts and opinions that were not based on the truth, or on a reasonable perception of the truth.
  3. Although there were instances of facts fairly indicated by the Respondent, not all such facts were fairly indicated, or they were simply omitted. Therefore, it was not possible for the SABC 2 to claim that it had a reasonable conviction that all the statements it made were true.
  4. Furthermore, the programme created an impression of dishonesty and/or lack of transparency on the part of RhinoForce – an impression which was not based on the facts.
  5. Moreover, the programme referred to facts, or opinion stated as facts, to which RhinoForce was not given a substantively fair right of reply, and in so doing it did not provide sufficient balance to afford audiences the opportunity to form their own opinions.
  6. In the result the complaint was upheld and the SABC reprimanded for its contravention of the Broadcasting Code.

Boerner stated, “The programme portrayed our client as dishonest. It was always our opinion that 50|50 were in breach of the BCCSA’s Code of Conduct. They presented a programme in which controversial issues were discussed, without making reasonable efforts to fairly present all the facts and our clients’ opposing points of view. They also created an impression of dishonesty that was not based on facts. It is most pleasing that the BCCSA has vindicated our client and the complaint against 50/50, SABC 2 has been reprimanded and the complaint upheld. 50|50, despite being an environmental programme, entered into the world of investigative journalism without thoroughly investigating. They were found to be in breach of the Code of Conduct and have been reprimanded accordingly. We trust that lessons have been learnt by 50|50 and its producers and that they will exercise caution in their future reporting. The errors of fact, together with the omission of relevant material, meant that the SABC 2 and 50|50 had no justification for such a programme within the ambit of the BCCSA Code. Dwindling viewership is no excuse for incorrect reporting and irresponsible journalism.” Joanne Lapin Thorpe, CEO of The Bead Coalition, owner of the Rhino Force brand says, “The rhino issue is highly emotive, and stirs the hearts and minds of millions. The scrutiny and investigation of commercial organizations donating millions to rhino conservation should be handled honestly, respectfully and responsibly.” In this instance rhino conservation should have superseded 50|50’s hidden agendas and ill-intended sensationalism. 50|50’s factually incorrect and defamatory broadcast regarding Rhino Force has threatened rhinos greatest hope, the consumer. With 419 rhinos already lost to illegal poaching this year, Rhino Force will fiercely accelerate efforts to save rhinos with their iconic red, black and white beaded bracelet, a simple accessory that has become a world best-seller and a global symbol of rhino conservation. Over 700,000 people proudly wear the bracelet, including HRH Prince Harry. A massive R5,264,690.21 has been raised and donated to rhino conservation by Rhino Force, including the facilitation of R1,080,000.00 for rhino relocation to Botswana. We thank the BCCSA for our vindication.” To learn more you can  read the Rhino Force BCCSA Tribunal’s Judgement here.

5 June 2014

Top South African courier company, Globeflight, has joined the fight to save South Africa’s endangered rhino through a country wide ‘Spot the Rhino’ campaign, whereby Globeflight’s beautifully painted rhino mascot named ‘Ilanga’ (meaning ‘Sunshine’) who will “lead the charge.”

Globeflight hopes to raise funds and awareness for rhino conservation, by choosing two RHINO FORCE beneficiaries to donate to – IAPF (International Anti Poaching Foundation) and Wilderness Wildlife Trust – as well as selling RHINO FORCE bracelets along the way.

Ilanga will tour South Africa and Swaziland in her own specially branded van from 4 July to September. At each town, green 3D rhino puzzles will be distributed at strategic points for people to assemble and take ‘selfie’ photos or videos in interesting and fun locations. The photos must be posted to Globeflight’s Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/Globeflight1), YouTube channel or the company’s Twitter handle (@Globeflight1) to stand a chance to win fantastic prizes.

For every ‘selfie’ posted, Globeflight will donate money towards the Wilderness Wildlife Trust’s Black Rhino relocation project and the IAPF, which, amongst other laudable initiatives, trains anti-poaching rangers.

Entrants must use #Ilanga and # Globeflight in all posts to qualify. Winners will be selected according to the number of ‘likes’ their photo or video receives. Prizes include weekly draws and cash and fantastic hampers.

At the end of the campaign in September, three entrants deemed the ‘most travelled’, ‘most creative’ and ‘best selfie’ will be awarded an all-inclusive three night stay for two at a five star South African resort complete with a wildlife experience.

In addition to the ‘core’ competition, entrants can also win weekly prizes by identifying the landmarks Ilanga will be photographed with along her journey. All participants need do is log on to Globeflight’s website (www.globeflight.com) identify the landmarks and complete the entry form.

In a bid to boost awareness of the campaign, Globeflight has partnered with popular local breakfast show ‘Expresso’ which will track Ilanga’s movements on its website, and assist with judging. The final three winners will be announced on Expresso on the 26th of September.

Local celebrities have already endorsed the interactive campaign. Once the campaign comes to an end, Ilanga will be auctioned at Hyde Park by ‘My Rhino’ to raise additional funds for rhino conservation initiatives.

Ilanga will visit Swaziland, Witbank, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Kruger Park, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, George, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Kimberly, Johannesburg and Pretoria. For further details on when Ilanga will be in your area, go to www.globeflight.com.

Rhino Force Donates Towards Black Rhino Translocation to Botswana

RHINO FORCE DONATES TOWARDS BLACK RHINO  TRANSLOCATION TO BOTSWANA

In a joint collaboration with the Botswana Government and Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Wilderness Safaris is thrilled to announce that a small group of Critically Endangered black rhino will be translocated from South Africa to northern Botswana in the first quarter of 2014. This follows the groundbreaking agreements reached with both the North West Parks and SANParks (South African National Parks) boards in February 2014 to each donate a number of black rhino to Botswana. (Please note that the actual figures are not mentioned to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the rhino.)

“All the stakeholders involved in this partnership are extremely pleased to announce this agreement, which has been years in the making. We are very confident that these animals will settle well and breed, given that the habitats available have been assessed as being perfect for black rhino,” says Wilderness Safaris Group Conservation Manager, Mr Kai Collins. He added that the project is confident of being allocated a further group of these critically threatened rhinos in the near future, bringing the breeding population to viable levels.

The Wilderness Botswana Rhino Project, an ongoing partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks, was started in the year 2000 with the reintroduction of white rhino from southern Botswana into protected areas in the north of the country.

Thanks to extensive fundraising efforts in preparation for this event by the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, the capture process of these special rhino will take place in the first quarter of 2014. Once captured, the rhino will be transported by air and released into the wilds of Botswana a few weeks later. This is an extremely delicate operation which will involve the staff of North West and SANParks, the Botswana Defence Force, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Botswana and Wilderness Safaris.

“It will involve an extremely high level of security both during the operation, as well as after the release of the rhino, and we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of our sponsors, such as the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, International Rhino Foundation, the Tiffany & Co. Foundation and RHINO FORCE to name a few, to ensure the ongoing success of this project”, Collins added.

The Bead Coalition, creator of the South African, best-selling RHINO FORCE bracelet, will donate a portion of the bracelet sale profits to the translocation cost. Joanne Lapin Thorpe, CEO of The Bead Co, says, “I believe private, commercial organisations need to get behind direct conservation action in order to make a difference. Translocation, we believe is one of the actions necessary to counteract poaching, while providing a safe haven for our endangered black rhino.” These simple red, black and white beaded bracelets, made in Africa, in previously disadvantaged rural communities are sold globally, and delivered to the world.

THE BEAD COALITION SPONSORS MND PATIENT’S DREAM

The BeadCo

J9 FOUNDATION
Bracelet 2

The viral #Neknomination from Australia, an extreme social media drinking game, involves challengers downing alcohol, posting videos online and nominating others to outdo them.

South African, Brent Lindeque, turned the game on its head, “Downing a can of beer is easy… imagine if we all harnessed the power of social media to make a difference in real people’s lives,” says Lindeque.

SA’s Nathania de Kock, #Neknominated Joost van der Westhuizen and her J9 Foundation colleagues. The #J9MomentsOfMagic initiative to give people suffering from Motor Neuron Disease (MND) a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience was launched.

Stuart MacFarlane, had always dreamed of taking his wife, Leoni and their three small children: Amy, Christopher and Duncan, to see Victoria Falls – one of the 7 Wonders of the World. But Stuart was diagnosed with MND in October 2011, and the family finances were quickly absorbed by medical bills.

This #Neknomination, changes that because The Bead Coalition, creator of the beaded MND bracelet, has just made Stuart’s dream a reality, with an all-expenses paid family holiday to Victoria Falls.

http://youtu.be/RiJCBRRBerE

Says Joost, “I have been a sufferer of MND for 41 months and I have firsthand experience of how this disease changes the way you think and your priorities in life. Family is important; the love of life is invaluable, and the gift is truly in the giving.  In the end, memories are all we have.”

The Bead Co. CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe says “Our MND bracelet is a beautiful symbol of support, particularly sentimental to me, inspired by my precious sister, Taryn, who also fights this disease. We are thrilled to sponsor the first #J9MomentsOfMagic campaign, and I know Stuart will treasure the memories of Vic Falls.”

“We are so grateful to The Bead Coalition for their generous sponsorship,” says Joost vd Westhuizen, who has some #Neknominations of his own. Joost and the J9 Foundation further nominate, Barend van Graan, CEO of the Blue Bulls, Gavin Varejes, CEO of Richmark Holdings and J9 Director, along with fellow trustee and Blink Pictures Director, Odette Schwegler. #Neknominees have 24 hours to ‘make good’.

South Africans can purchase a MND bracelet, available for R40 each, at all CNA’s, Foto First, Sneakers, Pick ‘n Pay Douglasdale or online at www.beadcoalition.com. Visit www.joost.co.za for more information on J9 Foundation and MND  http://youtu.be/RiJCBRRBerE

RHINO FORCE ASSISTS WILDERNESS WILDLIFE TRUST WITH FUNDS FOR SUCCESSFUL BLACK RHINO DARTING PROJECT

The BeadCo

Wilderness Safaris and the Trust have been been involved in rhino conservation for 20 years

From the sale of RHINO FORCE bracelets, R20,000 was donated to Wilderness Wildlife Trust

Black rhino anti-poaching and monitoring at Liwonde National Park

Black rhino anti-poaching and monitoring at Liwonde National Park

Wilderness Wildlife Trust, with the support of various partners including a generous donation from RHINO FORCE, facilitated the funding for a successful black rhino darting operation in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park, between 17 and 29 November 2013.

Led by Chief Veterinary Officer of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s African Rhino Specialist Group, Dr Pete Morkel, the aim of the darting operation was to fit VHF transmitters on as many black rhinos as possible in order to maximise monitoring efficiency of the population in the face of intensifying poaching pressure in the park. The new tracking devices aid ongoing monitoring, ecological research and overall security measures run by the managing authority, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), and the tourism concessionaire, Wilderness Safaris.

Since November 2012, daily patrols involving professional rhino trackers of the DNPW Rhino Protection Team and Krisztián Gyöngyi (Rhino Monitoring and Research Ecologist) have been conducted to monitor, protect and record relevant ecological data on the species living in and outside the Sanctuary. The new transmitters will not only increase the monitoring efficiency of the rhino, but locating them in the park will also be considerably easier.

“We had to ensure that the rhino were darted before the oncoming wet season and were thrilled with the success of the operation. Days were long, the team worked hard and as a result five rhinos were captured and treated during the 13-day campaign. We covered approximately 190km on foot, spending 118 hours actively tracking rhino in the bush. We were also grateful for the support and assistance of Dr Amanda Salb of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre and James Kamtsokota from African Parks Majete, whose exemplary tracking skills and knowledge of black rhino behaviour played an important role in finding the rhino”, said Mr Gyöngyi.

Conserving the small stock of black rhino in Liwonde is of a high national and international priority. However, like many populations in Africa, this one is also severely threatened by illicit poaching. This, coupled with the limited resources of DNPW in continuing its protection, necessitated the launch of the Trust’s Liwonde Black Rhino Protection Project in 2012. It is a joint collaboration between the DNPW, Wilderness Safaris Malawi and Mr Bentley Palmer – a private stakeholder who has played an instrumental role in the protection of rhino in Liwonde for over 20 years.

The Bead Coalition CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe says, “We are so proud that we could donate R20,000 from sales of our successful RHINO FORCE bracelets to assist with this project.”

Black rhino anti-poaching and monitoring at Liwonde National Park

From the sale of RHINO FORCE bracelets, R20,000 was donated to Wilderness Wildlife Trust

Wilderness Safaris Wildlife Trust supports about 30 conservations projects annually in Southern Africa- Nissan research vehicle

The Bead Coalition’s most successful initiative, RHINO FORCE, is proud to make its first donation payment of R20,000 to Wilderness Wildlife Trust. The donation was earmarked to assist with an urgent collaring and de-snaring operation in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park, which hosts the country’s most important black rhino population. This is just the start of The Bead Co’s contribution to the Trust to assist with their future rhino translocation and conservation efforts. RHINO FORCE’S successful red, black and white beaded bracelet on sale in retail outlets across South Africa is the original rhino bracelet with over 600,000 sold in support of rhino conservation, awareness and local employment.

The commercial, themed-bracelet production company helps keep 30 previously disadvantaged women employed in a rural development programme in SA’s North West Province. These women thread, assemble, close and package their products, before delivery to retailers in South Africa can take place. Colin Cooper, Chairman of the MRDP says, “In the Marico area, there is no work and virtually no new business, so this is an excellent opportunity for our beaders to earn a real income and to showcase their skills”.

Says CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe, “The RHINO FORCE bracelet was created to raise awareness and pay over a portion of proceeds to rhino conservation efforts, as well as to support local employment. In essence the bracelet supports the life of a cause and the cause of a life. Our business develops commercial, tangible mechanisms that financially aid conservation activities. The bracelet is a place where commerce and charity can thrive together in a sustainable, mutually beneficial model.”

Wilderness Safaris and The Wilderness Wildlife Trust

Wilderness Safaris and The Wilderness Wildlife Trust, have been involved in rhino conservation for more than 20 years; assisting with black and white rhino reintroductions and conservation in six countries: Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Bead Coalition is proud to announce a donation of R100,000 to RhODIS, the Onderstepoort DNA profiling database, which will fund the indexing of 166 individual rhinos. RhODIS is the project of The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Science, at the University of Pretoria. The donation is the direct result of RHINO FORCE bracelet sales.

This local, hand-made, iconic bracelet for rhino conservation has raised and paid R4,832,997.59 to rhino conservation NGO’s and charities to date. Previously disadvantaged women in rural communities in South Africa hand-bead the symbolic bracelets. “I am inspired by our loyal supporters who proudly wear the original, best-selling conservation accessory that actually saves rhinos”, says Joanne Lapin Thorpe, CEO of The Bead Co, “ I am equally delighted that the life of a cause can now benefit the cause of a life and vice versa”.

Dr Cindy Harper, Geneticist at Onderstepoort, instrumental in developing the DNA testing of rhino, believes each rhino deserves a thorough and efficient investigation and in some cases provides evidence to ensure that a poacher or trafficker is brought to book. She thanked RHINO FORCE for the generous donation adding, “It is constantly a struggle to keep up but the kind of support that you have provided makes this possible and is a motivation to continue”.

Bracelets are available at participating retailers for R40 each, for corporate sales via Amrod Corporate and online at www.beadcoalition.com, they will post anywhere in the world.

The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd, has selected Blue Groove Africa, South African Rugby Union’s (SARU’s) partner in the “Boks for Books” Literacy initiative, as the beneficiary of proceeds from sales of its new “I AM LITERACY” bracelet. Every bracelet sale is a guaranteed R10 for literacy development in South Africa.

The beautiful rainbow-coloured beaded bracelets, launched by The Bead Co. in September 2013, are handmade by women in a beading community in rural North West Province. The bracelet, carrying the message “Today’s reader is tomorrow’s leader” emphasizes the significance of improved literacy for school learners.

The “Boks for Books” initiative is SARU’s first venture into CSI and was born of a desire to make a significant contribution to South African society by supplying 23 fully stocked mobile or refurbished libraries a year to previously disadvantaged schools around the country.

The ‘I AM LITERACY’ bracelets will be available to purchase at selected CNA stores countrywide, Exclusive Books, Norman Goodfellows and online at www.beadcoalition.com for R40 each.  They will also be distributed for sale at schools across South Africa.

CEO of The Bead Co., Joanne Lapin-Thorpe said: “Our relationship with Signet Licensing and SARU led us to Blue Groove Africa and Elise Fish, who took my breath away with her determined do-good outlook. I am deeply passionate about the cause and projects supported by sales from our bracelet.”  Lapin-Thorpe continued: “Our product must support a direct and tangible initiative that makes sense to the local and international consumer. The ‘I AM LITERACY’ bracelet ticks all the right boxes.”

Elise Fish, Managing Director of Blue Groove Africa, thanked The Bead Co. for its first R10,000 contribution to “Boks for Books” and the opportunity to do good. “The partnership with The Bead Co. is almost surreal. Having been in the NPO field for ten years, my fellow directors and I decided to focus our energies on providing libraries and media centres to deserving schools in South Africa,” said Fish.

“The mission of Blue Groove Africa is to provide the building blocks for education and our goal is to populate a minimum of 200 libraries by 2020.

“We encourage as many people as possible to purchase a Literacy bracelet and assist us in providing one of the most fundamental rights, which is education, to the children of South Africa,” Fish said.

  • Bracelets are made by hand supporting employment in NW Province

The original, bespoke RHINO FORCE beaded bracelet continues to raise funds for Save the Rhino International (SRI), in the UK, and create employment in previously disadvantaged communities. The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd have contracted a group of beaders from the Madikwe Rural Development Programme (MRDP) in the Marico region of North West Province, to make the best-selling cause-related bracelets.

At the current level of production, the women earn in excess of their husbands. Colin Cooper, Chairman of the MRDP says, “In the Marico area there is no work and virtually no new business, so this is an excellent opportunity for our beaders to earn a real income and to showcase their skills.”

The Bead Co., a South African cause-related merchandise business, proudly supports local employment, up-skilling that uplifts communities across South Africa. Additional employment is created at The Bead Co’s headquarters in Johannesburg where a team of eight additional ladies pack, perform quality control and administrate various processes within the business.

Says CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe, “The RHINO FORCE beaded bracelet was created to raise awareness and funding for rhino conservation, however I am delighted that  demand has reached a level where significant local employment is created, and this is the plan going forward.”

SRI is a renowned rhino conservation organisation that works to conserve all five species of rhinos in Africa and Asia. Deputy Director, SRI, Susie Offord says, “The RHINO FORCE bracelets have been a huge success in South Africa already. Partnering with RHINO FORCE on an international level is a win-win relationship for SRI as the bracelets help to raise awareness about the plight of rhinos in Africa and in Asia, whilst raising much-needed funds for rhino conservation.”

RHINO FORCE is an initiative of The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd, a commercial, cause-related organisation. The original and best-selling bracelet, launched in June 2011, is synonymous with rhino conservation, having facilitated and raised over R4.6 million to date. Recently, the bracelet company facilitated funds for a translocation of six white rhino from South Africa to Botswana – a safe haven in terms of security and monitoring. Mitsubishi Motors SA, proudly sponsors a branded 2013 double cab Triton 3.2 diesel bakkie, used as a mobile billboard in the Johannesburg area.

Rhino Force Supports Salaries For Rangers And Trackers To Combat Poaching

un Untitled35 Untitled36 Untitled37

  • Rhino Force bracelet on sale globally
  • York conservation team consists of a warden and field rangers Spinathon at Virgin Active, Old Eds as a fundraiser

World Ranger Day, observed globally on 31 July 2013 by the International Ranger Federation (IRF), celebrates the honourable and dangerous work rangers do to protect the world’s wildlife. To support South African rangers who put their lives at risk to safeguard rhinos, RHINO FORCE proudly announces a new partnership with York Private Game Reserve, adjoining the greater Kruger Park. Bracelet sales will cover the total remuneration packages of the York conservation team made up of trackers, field rangers and the head warden.

Virgin Active Gym at Old Ed’s, Johannesburg, supported RHINO FORCE’s latest beneficiary, by hosting a 90 minute spinathon, and raised donations of R7,700 for these brave men in the field.

In 2012, the IRF confirmed the death of 41 rangers in the line of duty.

RHINO FORCE believes rangers should be protected, valued and incentivized. “Our rangers deserve to be adequately remunerated, recognised by the media and rewarded for their efforts, creating a climate where rangers can take the war to poachers”, says Joanne Lapin Thorpe, co-founder of RHINO FORCE.

York Private Nature Reserve formed by private landowners 10 years ago, lies in the South Western part of Balule Nature Reserve, and forms the unfenced South-Western boundary of the Greater Kruger system. White rhino were introduced into this area nine years ago, and York is actively involved in the WWF Black Rhino Expansion project. They protect their rhino with continuous, active, management and vigilant security measures. Andy Dott, Chairman of York and the greater Balule Reserve comments, “We are delighted to finally join forces with such a credible business and these much needed funds will go directly to the heart of the problem”.

Join Rhino Force now to support field rangers for their bravery and the critical role they play in rhino conservation. According to Save the Rhino International (SRI) in the UK, rangers are the real heroes of the poaching challenge. They are at the frontline of rhino poaching and often risk their lives. “As poachers use more sophisticated methods, the fight to protect the rhino becomes an even greater challenge, making this day appropriate to acknowledge all their hard work and dedication. Happy World Ranger Day to all,” says Susie Offord, Deputy Director, SRI.

RHINO FORCE is an initiative of The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd, a commercial, cause-related organisation. The public can support its RHINO FORCE Ranger initiative by buying a bracelet or donating directly to the York reserve rangers.

The Bead Co Bracelets Are Changing Lives

Untitled30 Untitled31 Untitled32 Untitled33 Untitled34

  • Yellow and black beaded Cycle Force bracelets made by hand by the MRDP Beading community
  • Qhubeka bicycles designed by World Bicycle Relief

The yellow and black beaded Qhubeka CYCLE FORCE bracelets raise funds for Qhubeka to distribute bicycles into communities in South Africa. The bracelet campaign also provides local employment for a large beading community in the Marico region of Madikwe, North West Province.

The Madikwe Rural Development Programme (MRDP), founded in 1988, supports this community with employment and in May 2013, a group of women started beading bracelets for The Bead Co’s Qhubeka CYCLE FORCE division. THE Bead Coalition, a South African company, proudly supports local employment and community upliftment. Additional employment for eight ladies, in packaging and quality control, is provided at The Bead Co’s warehouse in Johannesburg. CEO, Joanne Lapin Thorpe says, “The beaded bracelet raises funds for Qhubeka to provide bicycles to underprivileged individuals in rural communities, and I am delighted that this initiative has also created opportunities for talented South Africans.”

At the current level of production, the women earn in excess of their husbands. Says Colin Cooper, Chairman of the MRDP, “In the Marico area there is no work and virtually no new business, so this is an excellent opportunity for our beaders to earn a real income and to showcase their skills.”

Qhubeka donates bicycles in rural villages, in exchange for planted seedlings and waste collection, serving to directly improve a community. Qhubeka aims to break the cycle of poverty while investing in the youth of South Africa. 100 000 bicycles have been distributed since 2004.

To support, buy a Qhubeka CYCLE FORCE bracelet online at www.cycleforce.co.za for R40.  In South Africa, you can also purchase at your nearest Exclusive Books or Look & Listen store.

Rhino Force Support ‘Save The Rhino’

Untitled Untitled1 Untitled2 Untitled3 Untitled4

  1. The original Rhino Force beaded bracelet
  2. Save The Rhino International, registered in 1994
  3. Box of 100 bracelets for retail
  4. White rhino, captured by Timothy Griesel

RHINO FORCE is proud to announce a partnership with international beneficiary “Save the Rhino International (SRI)”, a renowned rhino conservation organisation that works to conserve all five species of rhinos in Africa and Asia. The RHINO FORCE bracelet significantly beaded with red, black and white beads will now be sold internationally, to raise awareness and funding for SRI’s urgent rhino programmes on both continents.

Registered in 1994, Save the Rhino International recognises that the future of wildlife is inextricably linked to surrounding communities. By funding field projects and through education, SRI delivers long-lasting and widespread benefits to rhinos and other endangered species, ecosystems and to the people living in these areas. The funds raised are used to support projects that address rhino conservation through a number of measures.

Deputy Director, SRI, Susie Offord says, “The RHINO FORCE bracelets have been a huge success in South Africa already. Partnering with RHINO FORCE on an international level is a win-win relationship for SRI as the bracelets help to raise awareness about the plight of rhinos in Africa and in Asia, whilst raising much-needed funds for rhino conservation. We’re really looking forward to developing this relationship further.”

The original RHINO FORCE bracelet, launched in June 2011, is synonymous with rhino conservation, and remains a South African best-seller, having facilitated and raised over R4.6 million to date.  RHINO FORCE believes in urgent, immediate and direct action, supporting one of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) principles of translocation as a method to save a species from extinction.

Recently, the bracelet organisation facilitated funds for a translocation of six white rhino from South Africa to Botswana – a safe haven in terms of security and monitoring. Relocating rhinos to suitable habitats spreads them out over a larger area, and enables rapid growth rates, and is why we have 400 separate populations in 9 African countries today.

This global alliance allows RHINO FORCE, a commercial company, to support and financially assist SRI’s conservation of the species in Africa and Asia, where they face critical threat.

“We created the beaded rhino bracelet for people all over the world to purchase and wear, to provide and show their support for rhino conservation. The bracelet has become the tangible, globally recognised symbol for the love of rhinos, and a solidarity bracelet for the cause,” says Joanne Lapin Thorpe, co-founder of RHINO FORCE. “We’ve aligned internationally with SRI, share a common ethos, and are dedicated to supporting this incredible organisation, as we drive our bracelet initiative into the international arena. We look forward to growing our support for SRI over the years in a number of exciting initiatives.”

Over 500,000 local and international supporters have donned the conservation accessory to show their support, and raise awareness of the critical threat our rhino populations face – three of five species are listed as “critically endangered” on the IUCN red list.

To help save rhinos in Africa and Asia buy a bracelet online at www.rhinoforce.co.za, they will post anywhere in the world.

Qhubeka Cycle Force – Mobilizing Communities One Bicycle At A Time

Untitled14 Untitled15 Untitled16 Untitled17 Untitled18 Untitled19

Images:

  • Cycle Force beaded bracelet
  • Qhubeka bicycles change lives and offer transportation in rural communities
  • Cycle Force bracelet box of 100

  • Bicycles – effective transportation in communities

The Qhubeka CYCLE FORCE yellow and black beaded bracelet was launched at the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in South Africa, in November 2012, and sells for R30 to support Qhubeka’s fundraising.  12 million children walk to school each day, sometimes a four hour return trip. Qhubeka provides bikes in rural areas and townships, where communities grow trees or collect litter in return for bicycles. Qhubeka uses the funds raised by CYCLE FORCE to purchase and distribute bicycles, providing effective transportation to schools, clinics and shops.

The Qhubeka initiative seeks to empower communities by donating bicycles in exchange for planting seedlings or collecting recyclable waste –  actions which also improve the communities in which they live. This embodies Qhubeka’s commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty while investing in the youth of South Africa.

Children will receive a brand-new, durable Qhubeka bike. Designed by World Bicycle Relief for the harshest African conditions, each bicycle is constructed locally, creating additional jobs in vulnerable communities.

Studies have shown five ways in which a bicycle makes a difference:

  1. 1.       Improved School Attendance

Results of a study indicated an average 18% improvement in school attendance for girls and 16% for boys after bicycle distribution, and this lasted for two years.  This is an encouraging sign of the program’s long-lasting benefits for students’ access to education.

96% of surveyed caretakers reported increased school attendance due to the bicycle, and that distance was the primary reason for absence. 89% of students get to school in an hour or less after bicycles were distributed, and Qhubeka believes that reduced travel times contribute to the increased attendance rates.

  1. 2.       Improved Academic Performance

Academic performance data collected from schools in this study indicate an average 22% point improvement for both girls and boys after bicycle distribution, higher than the average, and improved pass rates were sustained for two years after receiving bikes.

  1. 3.       Quality Of Life Indicators

Surveyed students rated their own feelings of well-being – 73% indicated they felt their lives were significantly improved after receiving bicycles, and 17% reported a noticeable change.

  1. 4.       Less Fear

All surveyed rural students indicated they were afraid while walking to school – most feared attack by wild animals; and girls feared rape because their long walk starts in the dark. After bicycles were distributed, 69% of the students reported feeling safe most of the time while they traveled to school.

  1. 5.       Better Access To Healthcare

Many survey respondents indicated using the bicycle to visit the local clinic. Appointments for children under 5 more than doubled, and this was attributed to the fact that mothers were able to transport young children for treatment with ease.

Qhubeka has distributed more than 100,000 bikes since 2004. Anthony Fitzhenry, Qhubeka Founder says, “My vision is to mobilise kids on bikes, a world where transportation is not a barrier to healthcare, education or economic development.”

Bracelets can be purchased online  www.cycleforce.co.za, or at an Exclusive Books or Look & Listen store. Buy and wear your Qhubeka CYCLE FORCE bracelet to support this exciting initiative. Visit Qhubeka’s  site for details on the programme and donations www.qhubeka.org

R4,6 Million Raised By Rhino Force

  • Africa Foundation, established in 1992

RHINO FORCE’s red, black and white beaded bracelet remains SA’s best-selling rhino accessory, maintaining unprecedented success in raising awareness and funds for rhino conservation. In total RHINO FORCE paid

R3 050 597.59 to Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) from sales of RHINO FORCE bracelets. This multi-million rand donation, acknowledged in thanks by the EWT, supports the NGO’s rhino programmes.

RHINO FORCE also thanks the EWT for their conservation activities undertaken in security and protection; wildlife trade law compliance; judiciary awareness and strategic support as the bracelet organisation re-directs its efforts to fully support rhino translocation.

This fine-tuned approach is in response to an urgent need for immediate, direct action, and in support of IUCN’s principle of translocation as a method to save a species from extinction. Proudly sponsored by MITSUBISHI SA, RHINO FORCE support Africa Foundation, and raised funds for the translocation of rhino from South Africa to Botswana – a safe haven in terms of security and monitoring. Relocating rhino to suitable habitats spreads them out over a larger area. Translocation also enables rapid growth rates, and is the reason we have 400 separate populations in 9 African countries today.

Rhino bracelet sales have raised R400,000 for Africa Foundation, over and above the R3 050 597.59 paid to the EWT. RHINO FORCE also facilitated a whopping R1.1 million from corporate donors, including Motorite Administrators, for the first RHINO FORCE relocation project. The first group of rhino are ready for release in Botswana.

The original RHINO FORCE beaded bracelet, launched in June 2011, is synonymous with rhino conservation, remaining a best-seller.  Over 500,000 local and international supporters have donned the conservation accessory. The continued support from retail, corporate and individuals has raised awareness for the critical threat to our rhino populations.

“We have identified a direct, immediate conservation action that is saving rhino today, through the sale of the beaded bracelet. Monies we raise and facilitate go directly to translocation. We believe it’s important to involve and educate South Africa in this fight,” says Joanne Lapin Thorpe, co-founder of RHINO FORCE. “We look forward to many more translocation projects and saving our rhinos.”

We encourage the public to purchase cause-related products from bona fide credible businesses and commercial entities that are underpinned by accountability and transparency. Furthermore, supporters are entitled to know how that money is spent by the supported NGO.

Rhino Force Facilitates Funding For Groundbreaking Rhino Translocation

Untitled1 Untitled2 Untitled3 Untitled4 Untitled5 Untitled6 Untitled7

Images:

  • Rhino Force beaded bracelet
  • Rhino capture by &Beyond expert team
  • Mitsubishi sponsored Triton Double cab
  • Africa Foundation, established in 1992

RHINO FORCE facilitated a R1.1 million donation to Africa Foundation to carry out the first ever private game reserve donation of rhino to another country.   &Beyond  moved six white rhino from South Africa to Botswana’s Okavango Delta in March 2013. This conservation coup has been generously funded by corporate donors including Motorite Administrators.  In addition, proceeds from sale of RHINO FORCE bracelets support Africa Foundation (&Beyond’s social development partner) and are earmarked for projects focused on rhino conservation. In just three months, R325,000 has been raised.

The black, red and white beaded bracelets, already synonymous with rhino conservation, are sold in several retailers in South Africa and internationally through an e-commerce site www.rhinoforce.co.za.

In 2012 alone, South Africa lost a devastating 668 rhino to illegal poaching, which is a 49% increase from the previous year’s figure of 448. Botswana has an excellent security system in place to protect these animals and will be a safe haven for the six relocated rhino. Translocations are a proven method of securing the survival of an endangered species.

After years of negotiation and planning, the translocation process is almost complete as the six rhino arrived safely. Game scouts from Botswana have undergone intensive tracking and monitoring training by &Beyond. The movement and behaviour of the herd will be closely monitored using satellite collars and telemetry and tracking equipment. A portion of this equipment as well as anti-poaching uniforms and binoculars has been generously supplied by the Chipembere Rhino Foundation.

“It’s the ideal opportunity for us to move our eggs out of one basket,” explains &Beyond Conservation Manager, Les Carlisle. “The project has the full support of the Botswana Rhino Management Committee and we are thrilled to be driving such a vital initiative for rhino conservation in partnership with Motorite and RHINO FORCE.”

Chris Thorpe, Founder of RHINO FORCE says, “We are pleased to know that all the funds we donate or facilitate go directly to translocation, which is an effective way to counteract poaching.  We also believe it’s important to involve and educate the communities in this fight, and Africa Foundation does this well.”

As one of southern Africa’s largest independent motor-related insurance administrators, Motorite supports this translocation to ensure the ongoing conservation of South Africa and Botswana’s natural heritage. To demonstrate another example of the motor industry getting behind rhino conservation, Mitsubishi generously sponsored a brand new Triton diesel double cab for RHINO FORCE to use as a mobile billboard at events, meetings and deliveries.

To follow the exciting project and for translocation updates, please follow RHINO FORCE on Facebook, or &Beyond conservation  blog, “Carlisle on Conservation”www.andBeyond.com/carlisle_on_conservation).

Help Fill Empty Tummies With A Heritage Bracelet

  • New SA Heritage bracelet launched for Feed SA by The Bead Co. Pty Ltd.
  • Handmade in rural communities, the bracelet represents the South African flag
  • A beading community in NW Province produces the bracelets

FEED SA, a section 21 non-profit organisation, has partnered with The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd to raise funds for the vital feeding and education programmes it runs for children within townships. A bespoke, beaded bracelet, created by The Bead Coalition (Pty) Ltd, will help raise money for its various projects.

“At FEED SA we believe that a chance at a better life begins with a full tummy, which is why we’re committed to feeding the hearts, minds and tummies of South African children who are forced to go to school on an empty stomach,” explains Candice Etberg of FEED SA.

“Our goal is to establish feeding programmes within townships aimed at those who receive no other forms of funding. We wish to uplift South Africans by ensuring that each child from our beneficiaries is guaranteed at least two nutritious meals a day,” says Joanne Tooch of FEED SA.

In addition to the feeding programmes, FEED SA helps to build and set up crèches, including operations and infrastructure like classrooms, toilets, ablutions, kitchens and offices, as well as teacher training and teaching curriculum. “FEED SA takes a hands-on approach in the townships where we operate, at a grass roots level. We work with prominent and reliable leaders in the communities. To fund these projects, we approach corporate companies for their CSI, which in turn scores them points for their BEE ratings. We also engage in various fund-raising initiatives and approach the private sector” says Candice.

FEED SA’s latest project aims to raise funds through the sale of a bespoke South Africa Heritage Bracelet, created by The Bead Co. Joanne Lapin, CEO of The Bead Co, produced and designed the beaded bracelets, aimed at creating awareness and raising the funds needed to feed the hearts, minds and tummies of underprivileged South African children.

“The SA Heritage bracelet is a beautiful delivery mechanism for FEED SA’s message – That every child has a right to be fed, educated and uplifted. We are therefore extremely proud to be associated with this initiative,” says Lapin. Local production of these hand-beaded bracelets also creates employment opportunities for previously disadvantaged South Africans. “Nett profits from the sale and payment of every Heritage bracelet will go directly to the projects and causes supported by FEED SA,” she says.

“We therefore urge all South Africans to celebrate their heritage and offer their support to those who are much less fortunate than we are by purchasing these uniquely South African artifacts,” concludes Etberg and Tooch.

The bracelets are available for R40 per bracelet. Contact The Bead Co. on 083 609 1111 to order or email maureen@beadcoalition.com for further info.

Mitsubishi Motors SA, which markets a growing range of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in South Africa, has joined RHINO FORCE, who is behind the red, black and white beaded bracelet, which creates public awareness and raises funds for translocation projects to save the species.

“We see this cause as being very close to the hearts of many South Africans and it fits in well with some important core principles of the Mitsubishi brand, namely adventure and the outdoor lifestyle,” says the marketing manager of Mitsubishi SA,  Braam Faul. “It’s as a win-win sponsorship because while we are helping conservation initiatives we are also increasing the awareness of the Mitsubishi brand as a concerned corporate citizen.”

RHINO FORCE, which was founded by Chris Thorpe and Joanne Lapin in 2010, has a sustainable business model that raises funds for Africa Foundation, earmarked for projects focused on saving Africa’s rhino populations. Translocations are fundamental to the ongoing survival of the endangered species. Six white rhino have been moved to safe haven in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, where excellent security and monitoring systems are in place for their protection.

Rhino Force’s involvement includes an important corporate social responsibility element where local communities are involved in producing and packaging beaded rhino bracelets that are sold at more than 600 retail outlets throughout SA.

The bracelets are sold for R30, with 50% of the money going to the communities which produce and pack the items, 30% going to Africa Foundation to fund projects through direct action. The balance of 20% goes to marketing and distribution costs as well as a small profit for the retailer.

Mitsubishi’s sponsorship includes the loan of a 2013 double cab Triton 3.2 diesel bakkie with RHINO FORCE branding to the organisation, while the motor company will use its dealerships as retail outlets for the bracelets.

In return Rhino Force will get involved with joint promotional events with Mitsubishi and its dealers, all of which will benefit the project in terms of publicity and brand awareness.

“I believe we have a responsibility to get involved in a project such as this which aims to drastically reduce the number of these animals being killed for their horns,” added Braam Faul. “With 158 killed in South African already this year after the loss of 668 last year, this is a major undertaking and I am proud our company is playing a role in conservation.”

Mitsubishi has a proud South African heritage which spans back over 75 years. The South African product range has been specially suited to this country’s unique conditions and lifestyle and offer vehicles for the serious off roader, the urban family, the small businessman, the outdoor sportsman and the image-conscious young roader. Mitsubishi customers enjoy the benefit of a nationwide dealer network, a dedicated, knowledgeable and enthusiastic sales teams, highly professional service centres, finance and insurance packages, tailor-made to suit every need.

Rhino Force Partners With Africa Foundation

  • White rhino translocation
  • RHINO FORCE’s Mitsubishi-sponsored Triton Double cab
  • Box of 100 bracelets
  • Motorite and &Beyond – other partners in the translocation

RHINO FORCE, proudly sponsored by Mitsubishi SA, and Africa Foundation (&Beyond’s social development partner) have joined forces for 2013. Proceeds received from the sale of RHINO FORCE beaded bracelets will influence conservation through direct action namely a translocation project.

“We have been approached by many rhino organisations for funding. However, when Les Carlisle, &Beyond’s &Beyond’s Conservation Manager, approached us and explained his dreams of  translocating rhino from South Africa to Botswana we realised that our RHINO FORCE bracelet offered a  perfect fit together with &Beyond and Africa Foundation’s conservation plans”, says Joanne Lapin from RHINO FORCE.

To date, RHINO FORCE has already donated R325,000 to Africa Foundation and facilitated over a million Rand from generous donors, including lead sponsor Motorite Administrators.

Founded in 1992 to support &Beyond’s commitment to conservation and communities, Africa Foundation – a registered non-profit organisation – completes the model of integrating conservation, high-end tourism and communities to their mutual benefit.

Proceeds from the sale of RHINO FORCE bracelets are earmarked for projects focused on saving Africa’s rhino populations. A small portion will also be used for conservation initiatives in the local communities surrounding &Beyond’s wildlife areas to educate people on the importance of conservation to ensure the survival of our rhino for generations to come.

96 rhino have been poached this year alone; and in 2012 we lost 668 rhino to illegal poaching, a 49% increase from the previous year. Botswana has an excellent security system in place to protect these endangered animals and will be a safe haven for the six relocated rhino.

After years of negotiation and planning, the translocation process is underway. Game scouts from Botswana have undergone intensive tracking and monitoring training by &Beyond. The movement and behaviour of the six rhino will be closely monitored using satellite collars and telemetry and tracking equipment supplied by Chipembere Rhino Foundation.

“We are pleased to know that all the funds we donate or facilitate go directly to translocation, which is an effective way to counteract poaching.  We also believe it’s important to involve and educate the communities in this fight,” says Chris Thorpe, Director of RHINO FORCE. “We look forward to supporting &Beyond, and The Africa Foundation’s good work through our new partnership.”
